An underwater camera tray is a specialised accessory designed to help stabilise and improve the functionality of a camera while diving. Here’s why it’s a valuable tool for underwater photographers and videographers:
1. Improved Stability:
Reduced Camera Shake: One of the biggest challenges in underwater photography or videography is keeping the camera steady. An underwater camera tray helps reduce shaking and vibrations, which leads to clearer, more stable shots. It provides a firm grip, especially in challenging conditions like currents or when you’re moving underwater.
Even Weight Distribution: A tray helps evenly distribute the weight of the camera and any additional equipment (such as strobes or lights), reducing strain on your hands and wrists. This allows for more controlled movements and steadier shots.
2. Better Ergonomics:
More Comfortable to Hold: Without a tray, holding an underwater camera can be awkward, leading to hand fatigue or cramping during extended shoots. A tray, often with handles, offers a more ergonomic and comfortable grip, making it easier to handle the camera for long periods.
Reduced Wrist Strain: By providing more surface area to grip, the tray alleviates the strain on your wrists that can occur when holding a camera alone, particularly with heavier setups.
3. Mounting for Accessories:
Attaching Strobes/Flashes: A camera tray often has mounting points for attaching external lighting, such as strobes or video lights. Proper lighting is essential for good underwater photography, and the tray helps you position the lights correctly for better illumination and subject highlight.
Organised Gear: The tray can help organise and stabilise additional gear, like filters, a focus light, or a GoPro mount. This ensures everything is secure and easy to access during your dive.
4. Better Control for Video:
For underwater videography, a tray allows for smoother panning and tilting of the camera, enabling more fluid video shots. When filming in dynamic underwater environments, a tray provides better control and ease of movement, reducing the risk of jerky or shaky footage.
5. More Versatility:
Two-Handed Operation: The tray allows you to hold the camera with both hands, which provides more control over both the camera and any attached accessories, such as lights or filters. This makes it easier to adjust settings, compose shots, or frame your subject while diving.
Helps with Composition: With a steady grip and the ability to adjust the camera’s orientation more easily, you have greater control over your shot composition, leading to higher-quality images or video footage.
7. Enhanced Image Quality:
Better Lighting Control: A tray provides the foundation for mounting external lights and strobes, which significantly improve the lighting of your subjects. Proper lighting is critical for underwater photography, where natural light often doesn’t reach deeper depths, leading to poorly lit or underexposed images.
More Consistent Results: With stable camera positioning and proper lighting setups, you can achieve more consistent and professional-looking results, particularly in challenging underwater conditions.
Conclusion:
An underwater camera tray enhances the overall experience of underwater photography or videography by providing stability, comfort, and better control over your camera setup. It helps reduce camera shake, allows for two-handed operation, facilitates the mounting of external lights or accessories, and generally improves the quality of your shots. Whether you’re an amateur or a professional diver, using a camera tray helps ensure you get the best possible results from your underwater photography or videography.
